Department of Zoology
Zoology or Animal Sciences is a very vibrant and broad-based field in the biological sciences. Govt. Murray College, Sialkot, like many other colleges of the Punjab, started B.Sc, the two years program, having combinations of Zoology, Botany, Chemistry in affiliation with the University of the Punjab, Lahore in mid 1970s.Luckily, from very early days, it was patronized by some very diligent and highly experienced faculty members. For so many years, this department had been working under the kind umbrella of Faculty of Biology. In 2010 BS (Hons), a 4 year degree was introduced by the Government of the Punjab in some 26 prominent Degree Colleges of the Punjab as a pilot project; Govt. Murray College was also one of them. At this college BS (Hons), the 4 years degree program is quite successfully running in 14 different disciplines in morning as well as evening shifts. To facilitate the growing demand, a separate department was set up. BS Zoology is no doubt, a first choice of students at Govt. Murray College, Sialkot.
The Department of Zoology demands the need of trained persons in a vast and interdisciplinary framework concerning Animal Sciences. At present Department of Zoology has gained recognition for academic excellence and prominence in various fields of academics and research in the areas of Cell andMolecular Biology, Physiology, Developmental Biology, Entomology, Evolution and Paleontology, Parasitology, Genetics, Wild life and Fisheries, etc. A Zoology graduate after BS (Hons) 4 years program has a diverse experience and competence to serve or to learn further in education, health, agriculture, industry and environment sectors. The Department has one of the most highly trained Faculty of Zoology comprising of 01 Professor,01 Associate Professor,01 Assistant Professor and 02 Lecturers and they are serving under the able patronage of Principal Dr. Muhammad Nawaz and an esteemed headship of Azeem Masih (Associate Professor). We feel proud to mention that the services of Dr. Shabina Ishtiaq were acquired from HEC (Islamabad) under IPFP program for one year. During her stay, Dr. Shabina and Dr. Muhammad Nawazz designed five different research projects for our BS students. A state of the art Lab of Zoology has been established where students are actively working on their projects. One of the projects was submitted to HEC, which has been approved and a funding of Rs. one million has been received by this college. This is a unique example at college level in Punjab. We are looking forward for excellence and glory of this department. May God Almighty help and guide us to achieve that cherished end. (Ameen)
